OVERVIEW:

Kommetjie is situated around a natural rocky bay, which resembles a basin. Hence, given rise to the name Kommetjie, which is Afrikaans for "small basin". There is evidence which suggests that prehistoric man used this basin as a means to trap fish.

Kommetjie is a relaxed seaside village often visited by surfers from around the world, who enjoy riding the waves of the various surf spots around the area. Powerful waves from the Atlantic Ocean rise up creating these ideals spots for surfing.

The surrounding coastline is an ideal condition kelp beds where crayfish and perlemone exist. The kelp which is washed up onto shore rots, breeding insects and, thereby attracting various species of birds.

Kommetjie offers various activities from surfing, snorkeling and swimming to canoeing, walking and crayfishing, with the crayfishing season running from November to April.

Kommetjie also offers places of interest such as the light house at Slangkoppunt and the wreck of Kakapo which lies approximately 80 meters above the waterline and is visible from Long Beach.
